It is no secret that Yahoo has purchased the micro-blogging site, Tumblr. However, it seems confusing to some as to why a small player in the world of search (and getting smaller), invested over a billion dollars in something that has no solid business model. The answer is semantics.

We found this interesting article on imassera.com, titled “Why the Yahoo (YHOO) Tumblr Deal is Part of the Semantic Web.” Every major player out there is struggling to position themselves for relevance and longevity in the ‘new’ (semantic) web. Yahoo CEO, Marisa Mayer, knows that if the company is ever to regain its past glory it has to redefine itself in the semantic web. In this new world, data and connectivity are kings.

For Tumblr users, the question may be “is this still cool?”
