It is predicted that by 2020 there will be three times as many connected devices in the world as people; thus the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT). This interesting information came to us from MeriTalk in their article, “Metadata Separates Data Lakes From Data Swamps.”

Information from all of those devices will feed into data lakes, which need to be broken down and sorted. Managing this data is just as important as understanding existing data.

Many professionals believe that metadata is the solution to prevent drowning in too much data. Since metadata is data that describes other data, it can be used to create a tiered storage system to prevent a data lake from turning into a data swamp. Sorting data through the use of tags expedites the search process and enhances the results.
