Recent IDC research shows that worldwide revenue from public IT cloud services exceeded $16 billion in 2009 and may reach $55.5 billion by 2014. I think it is safe to say that cloud services are here to stay.
Companies of every shape and color are utilizing the cloud to outsource noncore competencies, improve efficiencies, cut costs and drive productivity. One author offers a few best practices to help make the process of building and deploying applications a little less daunting.
First on the list is to “Design your applications for performance and scalability.” Recognizing the difference in building cloud-based applications and building on-premise ones is key. Designing applications to maximize their ability and benefit from the elastic nature of the cloud is the way to go.
