There is never just one person whose responsibility it is to manage records. Regardless of the size of the organization, it is ultimately everyone’s responsibility since everyone is generating the data from the start. Business Management Daily brought this news to our attention in their forum titled, “Do you have a records management strategy in place?”
The overwhelming amount of documents and data that we generate every day aren’t being safely stored and tracked. Important files, customer records, financial statements, logbooks, correspondence, social media content, and even security tapes and cellphone records must be properly handled and archived. There must be a system in place to get a handle on all of this.
This may start with taking inventory. Ask all departments what kind of documents they are responsible for and then build a records management procedure. Sound simple? No, but necessary.
