Social media has been a bully’s playground since its inception. As much as I personally enjoy connecting with friends and family, staying abreast of life events with those that are geographically-challenged, and having informative, and yes, sometimes goofy, conversations with friends – my tolerance of the etiquette and behavior of many in the social media arena is waning. So I was pleased to see one social media site take some real action towards prevention of this behavior. This interesting information came to us from CNET in their article, “Twitter now has a timeline to go after bullies and trolls.”
Beyond action, the social network is making its safety calendar public. Now you can see when it plans to enforce rules against abusive behavior.
“We’re updating our approach to make Twitter a safer place,” the company wrote in a blog post. “This won’t be a quick or easy fix, but we’re committed to getting it right. Far too often in the past we’ve said we’d do better and promised transparency but have fallen short in our efforts. Starting today, you can expect regular, real-time updates about our progress.”
