The internet and computers in general have changed many things in the business world. Accounting is no longer done by hand, inventory is managed automatically, and security is no longer just a safe or lockbox. DATAVERSITY brought this interesting topic to our attention in their article, “Why Cyber Security and Data Science Have Similar Problems.”
Using computer data for business advantages only began recently (less than 20 years ago), and it is really still evolving. The speed and efficiency continues to best itself as it grows and improves. Data science and cyber security are new terms comparatively. So, for mid-level management staff who pre-date this technology, learning to depend on data for business decisions requires a new muscle memory to be formed. It isn’t impossible, but must be intentional on the part of leadership to ensure proper training is provided.
There is no denying that the tech industry skews to younger workers and we (nor the article’s author) are not encouraging that. The onus also falls to those looking for new jobs to stay up-to-date on their skills relative to the market they choose to work in.
