Artificial intelligence (AI) is used in a variety of technological and everyday applications. It is being utilized for a wide range of activities in healthcare, finance, city planning, and security. Everyday consumers unknowingly use or benefit from AI on their way to work, communicating online with friends, searching on the web, and making online purchases. DATAVERSITY brought this interesting information to our attention in their article, “Case Study: Artificial Intelligence Helps Bike Share Programs Get Smart.”

One example of AI being used in potentially unorthodox applications is with the North American Bikeshare Association (NABSA). A key tenet of bike share culture is the open sharing of data about ridership trends. The purpose of this is to provide transparency and remove barriers to other cities wanting to create bike share programs.

In identifying a solution, it’s important to consider all factors affecting transportation by bike, and understanding the user’s needs can be a challenge. Rather than being seen just as a fun alternative, bike share operators and the cities where they operate want bike share travel to be seen as a viable part of the transportation system for city residents. There was a need for an intelligent solution and AI fit the bill.
