Emerging technologies, like machine learning, is being applied in various industries to improve the speed and quality of results. This is true for healthcare as well. This interesting news came to us from Health IT Analytics in their article, “Deep Learning Model Could Predict Outcomes for HCC Patients.“
Cleveland Clinic researchers have collaborated with Owkin, a startup that deploys artificial intelligence (AI) and federated learning technologies, to develop a deep learning model to predict survival and outcomes for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients after liver transplantation. Currently, there are no reliable histological markers of relapse-free survival in HCC patients following a liver transplant, which is crucial in predicting patient prognosis.
This study demonstrated the prognostic power of deep learning in this particular situation. It will be interesting to see how replicable it is in other healthcare diagnostic settings.
It is important to understand how the technology produces these results. Explainable AI allows users to comprehend and trust the results and output created by machine learning algorithms.
