English and Latin in the Plant Taxonomy World

The International Botanical Congress decided in 2011 that the future of plant nomenclature would be published electronically and named using English. In April this year in PhytoKeys, Christina Flann from Wageningen University in the Netherlands, Nicholas Turland of the Botanic Garden and Botanic Museum Berlin-Dahlem, Germany, and Anna Monro of the Centre for Australian National Biodiversity Research in Canberra described the weeklong deliberations that went into this decision.

Those giant wooden cabinets were filled with mysteries to be uncovered, but the first mystery was how to navigate it. There were always the artists—the librarians—who could help you through it, but that is really only viable for a limited amount of content; librarians have other duties, after all.

My mother is full of musings and witticisms. I should start my own blog just listing them but hence, no time. However, one of her favorite sayings especially when I was in my teen years and wanting everything everyone else had, was "imagine how boring this world would be if we were all the same?" Now in my forty-something years I see the wisdom and truth in those words. I admire uniqueness and sometimes stubbornness in others and myself. I don't want to be like everyone else. I like being the unique being that is me.

The Association for Information Management (ASLIB) is offering a course on Thesaurus Basics. It is a distance learning platform and is scheduled for October 15, 2014. This course introduces the ideas behind the thesaurus, the most sophisticated gold-standard controlled vocabulary for information organization and retrieval. It enables participants to understand what thesauri are, why and how they are used, and why they are worth the intellectual effort needed to construct and maintain them.
