December 24, 2010 – Russian search engine Yandex rolled out a new feature recently that aims to make its search experience seem a lot more intelligent. Sounds a bit like semantics to us.
TechCrunch brought this news to our attention in their article, “Russian search engine Yandex gets a semantic injection.” This new feature has been named “Spectrum” and uses technology and machine learning to “infer implicit queries and return matching search results.” With natural language processing and taxonomy combined together to produce intent, the query looks at historic search patterns to produce results with potential meaning.
Rumor has it that Yandex is considering an initial public offering and this just after partnering with VKontakte, the largest social network in Russia. It seems there is a lot going on over there and that is encouraging to the world economy and world of technology.
