The trend these days is for organizations to treat data like a burden instead of as a valuable asset that should be treated as such. Therefore, the focus, too often, is on how to reduce the cost of this burden instead of maximizing the opportunity.
Of course, reducing costs is always a worthy goal, but not to the expense of being reactive versus proactive to managing data. When businesses become more aware of the value, we should see more investments in business intelligence and related analytics applications, and more companies will be creating chief data officer positions to protect their data. This step will give them a competitive edge in addition to saving costs. Because a real data manager will eliminate redundancy in data.
