A group from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine is testing the use of  bioinformatics and other technologies to better understand how cells function. They are doing this with the use of ontologies.

Fierce Health IT brought this news to our attention in their article, “How lessons from iPhone’s Siri aid biological exploration.” The same technology that powers the iPhone’s voice-controlled personal assistant, Siri, is being used to store and manage the large amounts of genetic and biological data needed to understand the structure and working relationship of the cellular system.

Ontologies and other controlled vocabularies help ensure that machine-assisted or fully automated indexing is comprehensive, regardless of what you are indexing.
