The challenges continue to accumulate in data governance. This is in part due to the variety of data that gets captured and analyzed, and also due to the pressure to maintain complicated relationships among various data elements. Inside Big Data brought this interesting news to us in their article, “Metadata Governance in the World of Big Data.”

Organizations have long struggled to get well-defined customer or product master data. This is even more important in the area of networked devices, the Internet of Things (IoT).

Data governance has been centered on two types of data: transactional and master. Implementers of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems have long focused on these two types of data. What is different now is instead of just wanting to process transactions we want to consolidate or analyze transactional information to make better business decisions. That will likely require semantic or graph data technologies.
