Interest in data governance has been increasing, even to the point of almost doubling in the last three years, according to some recent Google statistics. CTO Vision brought this interesting topic to our attention in their article, “Why Interest In “Data Governance” Is Increasing.”
Before we delve into the “why”, it is important to note that “data governance” covers a myriad terms. For instance, to fall in the Google search statistics for data governance, a query could include anything from big data to metadata management to semantic consistency, with many others in between.
Though all these terms are related, they do not carry the same definition. In just three closely related terms, you can see the disparity.
- Data Strategy addresses how data programs are planned and executed.
- Data Architecture addresses how an organization’s current and future data and metadata are defined and organized.
- Data Governance addresses how data, metadata, and their associated processes are managed.
So, back to the why. There is definitely an awareness on the part of industry that managing data as a resource may require different approaches to managing how organizations operate. However, as with most processes, we may gain more questions before we arrive at an answer.
