One challenge facing most organizations who are involved in cloud computing, and that number grows every day, is building systems that can identify and address the difference in data. This interesting information came to us from Silicon Angle in their article, “Businesses must develop a data taxonomy for edge-related systems.”
Because the digital business systems are getting more and more complex, information professionals recommend a data taxonomy to inform hybrid cloud and edge computing system designs.
The taxonomy should be designed to help distinguish between three data types:
- Primary data is raw data, in the form of measurements or signals, that originates from edge sensors. Though primary data is a key component of the Internet of Things, most will not make it to the internet.
- Secondary data is needed to enact more complex events but will be in much less volume. It is persistent and also key for model training and deployment.
- Tertiary data is integration, modeling and management data. This is the data that will exist in the cloud.
The technology issues and cost impact related to handling different classes of data are not to be ignored. Business strategy should apply and decisions made based on the entire picture.
