Word on the street is the Pentagon is set to announce plans for a new Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC). Venture Beat brought this interesting news to our attention in their article, “The Pentagon wants to expand its controversial Project Maven AI initiative.”
Project Maven might be the model for this new project. Project Maven is the well-known and much reported on controversial collaboration between U.S. military and private companies that trained algorithms to analyze drone footage.
The proposal for JAIC aims to accelerate intelligence and military use of machine learning. The military plans to use Project Maven’s machine learning algorithms to sort through materials captured in raids, and potentially to help military and intelligence analysts prioritize enemy targets.
Just last year, a public report by Harvard revealed how unprepared the US Military is when it comes to artificial intelligence technology. This makes this new project even more interesting.
