Data storage is an issue for any organization. The type of data can make a difference in the needs and solutions tailored to fit the situation, but it is always a challenge. TV Technology brought this interesting information to our attention in their article, “WGBH’s Object Storage-Based Archive Illustrates The Power Of Metadata.”
Boston’s WGBH-TV has a long history of providing programming for PBS and other outlets. Their program library contains thousands of hours of film and video in a variety of formats that have become increasingly hard to manage over the years. Expected problems like volume exist, but also increasing rates of ingest, manual processes, no digital rights and inadequate media asset management, drove the team to search for a better solution. At the end of the day, the key to managing and maximizing the vast archive was as simple as metadata. Object storage as a hybrid solution provided the best of both worlds and helped make content accessible.
