Data continues to grow and the variety and velocity progresses just as rapidly. Because of this businesses face two urgent challenges: how to uncover actionable insights within this data, and how to protect it. This interesting information came to us from Information Week in their article, “Big Data Governance – Metadata Is the Key.”

Both of these challenges can be aided by a new approach to data governance. One that is designed to address data that is scattered throughout the enterprise in many formats, and coming from many sources.

Data governance is the overall management – availability, usability, integrity and security -of data used in an enterprise. A sound data governance program includes a governing body or council, a defined set of procedures and a plan to execute those procedures. This can be challenging when the data comes in both structured and unstructured forms.

If data management is the logistics of data, data governance is the strategy of data.
