Business languages are different based on your product. Navigating insider language is often like writing code. A language is critical to being able to communicate with others in your organization as well as with your customers. The language of your business also influences how the programmers and data scientists identify those things that their data systems track and analyze. Forbes brought this interesting topic to our attention in their article, “Why ‘Ontology’ Will Be A Big Word In Your Company’s Future.

Most organizations refer to this language as an ontology, which literally means “the study of the names of things.” Imagine all of the resources that your company manages in one way or another. Resources either have associated sets of values or some relationship to another thing or category. The relationships these resources have is the collective ontology.

How the ontology assists in making content findable is by the set of rules that describes what properties are in each sheet, and how the sheets are related is the ontology, and the set of all cells that makes up the data is a data set or triple store in that ontology.

The rules, structures and query languages for getting data from this data set is known as semantics, with the whole of the data set known as a knowledge base.
