It is always interesting to see how technology, especially new technology, is being used by organizations. One of the more interesting ones is that LinkedIn is now using machine learning to determine skills of people. With over 575 million members in the LinkedIn database and 35,000 standardized skills in LinkedIn’s skills taxonomy, LinkedIn is figuring out what skills a member has via machine learning technology playing matchmaker.
They can identify skills that a member has based on things that they explicitly added to their profile. The next step is to scan through all the words that are on a member’s profile and determine if it’s pertaining to the member, as opposed to the company or another subject. Based on the other attributes, they can then determine if it is very likely that they also have that skill.
