Open source is almost everywhere these days. It refers to the open source model, in which software or other products are released under an open source license as part of the open source software movement. Some professionals are excited about the resources and opportunities acquisitions can bring to the open source movement, while others worry that tech giants may change what they initially loved about open source. This interesting information came to us from The Next Web in their article, “Why corporate acquisitions could be good for the open source community.”

IBM recently announced its acquisition of Red Hat and Microsoft announced its agreement to acquire GitHub. It seems the world’s largest companies are either releasing or acquiring their own open-source software. Open source maintainers are just disappearing or burning out.

As cloud computing services evolve, tech companies see open source as the key to driving innovation, and its use is accelerating.
