One of the biggest results of the technological advances is the Internet of Things (IoT). Between smart toasters, connected glucometers, and home security door bells – more everyday items are being connected to the web as part of the IoT. Connected machines and objects offer the potential for a fourth industrial revolution, experts predict. And by 2020, it is expected that more than half of new businesses will run on the IoT.
The existing and emerging technologies that have created IoT are not changing just the internet, but they are instead altering the very things connected to the internet: the devices, sensors, and gateways on the edge of the distributed network that can request a service or start an action without human intervention.
The changing geopolitics and complex security challenges must be acknowledged and resolved before these converging systems get widely adopted.
