The general assumption is that technology, even artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies, are boring and dry. So would it surprise you to learn that AI can learn humor? This interesting and funny topic is brought to us by Gizmodo in their article, “Can AI-Generated Text Be Funny?“
The big issue with AI when it comes to humor is cultural knowledge. Most humor is based on current events, colloquiums, trends, and daily trivial news. In other words, to be funny, you need to know a lot about the world because humor works by violating expectations.
Research in computational humor is still in the very early stages, but computers seem to be getting better and better at it. There’s still a long road ahead, but fortunately, that road is paved with bad puns and cheesy one-liners. It may be possible for future AI technologies to even generate funny pictures/art.
