The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the pace of emerging technologies. This is true in healthcare as well as other industries. Fierce Healthcare brought this news to our attention in their article, “Healthcare AI investment will shift to these 5 areas in the next 2 years: survey.”
Artificial intelligence (AI) is not one technology, but rather a collection of them. Most of these technologies have immediate relevance to the healthcare field, but the specific processes and tasks they support vary widely. AI adoption has increased and is helping healthcare leaders solve some of the old and new challenges, including COVID-19 tracking and vaccines. The complexity and rise of data in healthcare means that AI will increasingly be applied within the field.
Healthcare struggles with a massive administrative burden that costs hundreds of billions of dollars annually. In fact, many of these unnecessary administrative costs are associated with fraud, waste and abuse. Machine learning and AI have the power to change this––helping to reduce costly, time-consuming manual processes and truly changing the cost-quality curve in healthcare.
