Semantics is the branch of linguistics and logic concerned with meaning. There are a number of branches and subbranches of semantics. People can absolutely interpret words differently and draw different meanings from them. Semantics EurekAlert! brought this topic to our attention in their article, “A study identifies a universal property for efficient communication.”

To look deeper in semantics, one study analyzed how artificial neural networks develop spontaneous systems to name colors. The researchers formed two artificial neural networks trained with two generic deep learning methods. They put them through exercises intended to not limit the language available to use. When they learned to play the game successfully, the artificial neural networks had developed color-naming terms spontaneously.
