Access Innovations, Inc., provider of Data Harmony software solutions, is proud to announce the implementation of a taxonomy for the new open access journal PLOS Water. PLOS contracted with Access Innovations as they were in the planning stages of the new journal, knowing that having a taxonomy in place for semantic enrichment from the start would ensure that their end users would be able to find the right information at the right time.
The goal of the project was to create a separate taxonomy to cover the anticipated PLOS Water content. The project began by assessing several sources to pull water concepts from and then we worked to seamlessly integrate them into the scope of PLOS Water. Part of the project was also to create a taxonomy framework that could be built upon as the journal grows and expands, making maintenance easier and indexing more accurate.
“We appreciate that Access Innovations was able to work with us, not only building the taxonomy but supporting us as we developed the scope of PLOS Water,” said Dan Shanahan, Publishing Director, PLOS. “The team was able to work diligently and yet remain flexible as we worked our way through the project.”
“Building this taxonomy was a new kind of challenge for us because we didn’t have content to work from,” comments Samantha Lewis, Production Coordinator at Access Innovations. “Usually, we have existing content to analyze for terms using n-gram analysis. For this taxonomy we had to find other sources for terms.”
PLOS Water was released on February 15, 2022, and already has published 12 papers. Additional open access journals are in the pipeline following the same methodology.
