Data governance refers to the set of laws, policies, regulations, authorities and decision-making structures that guide how enterprises collect, share and use data to inform decisions. Failure to strengthen balanced data governance not only leads to harms and infringement of rights, but curtails innovation, restricts economic transformation and undermines using data to its greatest potential with the highest rewards and lowest risks. This interesting topic came to us from JD Supra in their article, “Focus on Data Governance in Healthcare: Part One of a Three-part Series on Data Governance, Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence.”

Some might look at this definition and think they have achieved data governance because their data is housed and secured in a trusted public cloud with logins restricted to key staff and because they have a separation between their production and development environments. However, while essential, those items are not data governance.
