Natural language processing (NLP) is a term we hear frequently. However, natural language understanding (NLU) is often confused with NLP. Interestingly, they both make search more intelligent and ensure people can search and find what they want. The Search Engine Journal brought this interesting information to our attention in their article, “How NLP & NLU Work For Semantic Search.”
Human language is fluid and complex. Two people may read or listen to the same passage and walk away with completely different interpretations. If humans struggle to develop perfectly aligned understandings, it is no surprise that machines struggle as well.
The field of NLU is dedicated to developing strategies and techniques for understanding context in individual records and at scale. The technique is applied to resolve tasks such as content analysis, topic modeling, machine translation and question answering.
Making data findable and understandable is something we know a little about. Whatever you are searching for, it is important to have a comprehensive search feature and quality indexing against a standards-based taxonomy.
