AI in the Sky

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to change the transport sector drastically. From helping cars, trains, ships and airplanes to function autonomously, to making traffic flows smoother, it is already applied in numerous transport fields. This interesting topic came to us from the Airport Review in their article, “Digital towers, artificial intelligence, and the next generation of airport air traffic management.”

Beyond making our lives easier, it can help to make all transport modes safer, cleaner, smarter and more efficient. AI-led autonomous transport could for instance help to reduce the human errors that are involved in many traffic accidents. However, as with all things, come real challenges, including unintended consequences and misuse such as cyberattacks and biased decisions about transport.

AI does not refer to one technology but rather to a vast set of diverse approaches, methods and technologies, which to different degrees and in different ways show intelligent behavior in various contexts.

Because most organizations have little knowledge on how AI systems make the decisions they do, and as a result, how the results are being applied in the various fields that AI and machine learning are being applied, explainable AI can help. It allows users to comprehend and trust the results and output created by machine learning algorithms.
