Two restaurant locations in upstate New York are testing artificial intelligence (AI) technology that takes drive-thru orders. This interesting news came to us from CNBC in their article, “Panera Bread tests artificial intelligence technology in drive-thru lanes.”

Many industries have been experimenting with AI and restaurants will not be left out. Many have been investing in improving the drive-thru experience for customers, adding more lanes and testing tech that would improve order accuracy and service times.

When people think of AI in restaurants, their minds always seem to jump right to kitchens staffed by robots who are able to cook so well, they can replace their human counterparts. However, two Panera Bread locations in upstate New York will have their orders taken by a computer in a test of AI technology’s accuracy and ability to decrease service times.

The real challenge is that most organizations have little knowledge on how AI systems make the decisions they do, and as a result, how the results are being applied. Explainable AI allows users to comprehend and trust the results and output created by machine learning algorithms. Explainable AI is used to describe an AI model, its expected impact and potential biases.
