Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and their applications continue to grow and evolve. AI technologies are now being deployed across almost every industry and sector, including transportation, healthcare, defense, finance, and manufacturing. But what exactly are these technologies? How prevalent are they? Information Age brought this interesting topic to our attention in their article, “We are in a golden age of artificial intelligence.”
Not only are we in the digital age, we are in the prime time for AI. With the emerging technology dominating research and ushering new scientific breakthroughs, unfortunately the interest in the development and use of AI may once again come to a grinding halt.
Worldwide, the proportion of peer-reviewed papers that involve AI has been steadily growing over the last 20 years with AI attracting more citations in 2020 than any other individual field of research. In industry after industry, data, analytics and AI-driven processes are transforming the nature of work. While we often still treat AI as the domain of a specific skill, business function, or sector, we have entered a new era in which AI is challenging the very concept of the firm.
It doesn’t help that still after all this time, most organizations have little knowledge on how AI systems make the decisions they do, and as a result, how the results are being applied in the various fields that AI and machine learning are being applied. Explainable AI is used to describe an AI model, its expected impact and potential biases. Why is this important? Because explainability becomes critical when the results can have an impact on data security or safety.
