Digital twins are not artificial intelligence (AI)-created robots, though that could be the next science fiction movie plot. A digital twin is a virtual representation of an object or system that spans its lifecycle, is updated from real-time data, and uses simulation, machine learning and reasoning to help decision-making. This interesting topic came to us from Report Door in their article, “Why composability is key to scaling digital twins.”
Digital twins enable enterprises to model and simulate buildings, products, manufacturing lines, facilities and processes. This can improve performance, quickly flag quality errors and support better decision-making.
Although simulations and digital twins both utilize digital models to replicate a system’s various processes, a digital twin is actually a virtual environment, which makes it considerably richer for study. The difference between digital twin and simulation is largely a matter of scale.
Digital twins are part of the future. As a digital thread-centric approach takes center stage to enable integration both at a data platform silo level as well as the organizational level, the future of digital twins is nearly limitless.
