Cybersecurity is the discipline of deploying software tools and technologies to safeguard computing systems against cyberattacks, both external and internal. Data analytics can augment cybersecurity and predict data breaches through the application of methods and technology against advanced, evolving cyber threats. CompTIA brought this interesting information to us in their article, “Cybersecurity and Data Analytics: Double Dipping on Two Hot Trends

Interconnected data services continue to grow in size and complexity, exposing new vulnerabilities to cyberattacks and outages. Services such as cellphone, texting, media streaming, and data storage increasingly underpin our economic, social, and community support structure. Interruption or disruption of such essential services can create great inconveniences to people and organizations. Massive distributed sensing and control systems, forming the emerging Internet of Things (IoT), are also vulnerable to malicious attacks with potentially grave consequences.

There is a need for cybersecurity defenses that go beyond the use of reactive models based on signature detection and rule-based decisions toward predictive models. Predictive models will use statistics-based anomaly detection principles to detect and control novel malware and evolving software exploitation strategies.
