Understanding taxonomies and how they are used can be challenging, depending on the context and audience. The Accidental Taxonomist brought this interesting topic to us in their article, “Taxonomy Definition.”
Taxonomy is the science of classification – a basic means of understanding the world around us. Creating information order and structure is what a taxonomy is all about. Classifying documents and information against the taxonomy increases the likelihood of document discoverability and the probability of a positive transaction. A taxonomy is a structured kind of controlled vocabulary. A controlled vocabulary is needed to ensure that machine-assisted or fully automated indexing is comprehensive of the subject, regardless of that subject.
A taxonomy may have two main features, naming and structure, and it’s important to understand that a taxonomy and a classification system are not necessarily the same.
Data Harmony is Access Innovations’ artificial intelligence suite of tools that leverages explainable AI for efficient, innovative, and precise semantic discovery of new and emerging concepts. We help find the information you need when you need it. Whether it’s an upgrade of an existing taxonomy or the creation of one from scratch, we work with you on a taxonomy and thesaurus that meet your needs. We classify your data in the context of a particular industry and its unique data requirements, so the enriched content is useful for analysis and deeper understanding of your knowledge base.
