The recent Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) Conference in Manchester, UK provided a friendly forum to share information and knowledge, learn about new initiatives and engage in open discussion on the challenges and opportunities facing scholarly publishing today – and to feature some fresh new musical talent? This fun and interesting news came to us from The Scholarly Kitchen in their article, “A Musical Tour of the History of Scholarly Communications.”
The performance “Scholarly Communication — The Eras Tour: A Time Travel Musical” was on the agenda and performed by Romy Beard from ChronosHub, Access Innovation’s own Heather Kotula, Jude Perera from Wiley, Kriyadocs’ Ravi Venkataramani and Delta Think’s Heather Staines, who also was the writer of the skit.
All the songs were a reinterpretation on Taylor Swift songs. They were clever and fun, with some slapstick added in. It was a good reminder that however serious our work is, there is always time to have fun.
However, the event wasn’t all musicals. The keynote was Jake Okechukwu Effoduh, Assistant Professor at Lincoln Alexander School of Law, Toronto Metropolitan University and his presentation was titled, “Scholarly Publishing in the Era of Open Access and Generative AI.”
One of the biggest challenges is that most organizations lack a clear understanding of how artificial intelligence (AI) systems make decisions and how to interpret the results produced by AI and machine learning. Explainable AI addresses this issue by enabling users to comprehend and trust the outcomes generated by machine learning algorithms. It provides a detailed description of an AI model, its expected impact and potential biases.
