Artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly evolved into one of the most transformative technologies of our time, enabling advancements in fields like healthcare, education and industry. Yet, as we marvel at AI’s capabilities, one compelling question often arises: what fuels its intelligence? Beyond the layers of algorithms, data processing and neural networks, is living intelligence the secret ingredient that underpins and inspires AI? Harvard Business Review brought this important and interesting topic to our attention in their article, “Why “Living Intelligence” Is the Next Big Thing.”
Living intelligence refers to the cognitive abilities and adaptability of biological organisms, including humans. Unlike machines, living intelligence is deeply intuitive, flexible and, most importantly, self-driven. It evolves naturally over time through experience and interaction with the environment.
AI, at its core, is modeled after aspects of living intelligence. Neural networks, for instance, draw inspiration from the human brain, mimicking the way neurons communicate. Reinforcement learning—where algorithms learn from trial and error—mirrors how animals adapt and refine behaviors. These parallels highlight the influence of biological intelligence on artificial systems.
However, AI lacks the self-awareness and intrinsic motivation of living beings. Every AI system operates within the confines of its programming and the data it’s trained on. Living intelligence, on the other hand, thrives on curiosity and creativity, attributes that remain elusive in machines.
Behind every AI system lies the human brain. Data scientists, engineers and researchers provide the initial spark of intelligence by designing algorithms, curating datasets and setting objectives. The knowledge, intuition and problem-solving abilities of these individuals are all products of living intelligence. Without this input, AI would simply be an inert collection of code and hardware.
