The legal field has long been known for its meticulous research requirements, dense case law and the painstaking task of sifting through mountains of legal documents. Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the game, offering powerful tools that can streamline the process, enhance efficiency and even help predict case outcomes. However, as with any disruptive technology, AI in legal research comes with both advantages and drawbacks. This interesting topic came to us from The New Stack in their article, “How AI Is Transforming Legal Research and Practice.”

One of AI’s biggest advantages in legal research is its ability to process vast amounts of information quickly. Traditional legal research requires hours of combing through case law, statutes and legal precedents. AI-powered tools can analyze thousands of legal documents in seconds, providing relevant results almost instantly.

Law firms often spend a significant amount of time and money on legal research. AI can reduce billable hours spent on research, making legal services more affordable for clients.

While AI can analyze text and recognize patterns, it lacks true understanding of legal nuances and context. Legal arguments often require interpretation, judgment and reasoning that AI simply can’t replicate. This means AI-generated research still needs human oversight to ensure proper legal interpretation.

Though AI can save money in the long run, implementing AI-powered legal research tools can be expensive upfront. Smaller law firms or solo practitioners may struggle with the initial investment needed to access high-quality AI tools.

The legal profession must balance AI’s advantages with its limitations, ensuring that human expertise remains central in interpreting and applying the law. While AI can be a powerful tool, it should serve as a complement—not a replacement—for the critical thinking and judgment that lawyers bring to the field.

The real challenge is that most organizations have little knowledge on how AI systems make decisions. Explainable AI allows users to comprehend and trust the results and output created by machine learning algorithms.
