It’s time for a data regulation reboot. Many of the data privacy and security laws we rely on today were built for a world where the internet was the biggest innovation on the block.

Regulations like the GDPR and CCPA were groundbreaking in their time, but they weren’t designed to anticipate neural networks generating human-like responses or blockchain storing immutable records across jurisdictions. These laws were built for a more linear, tangible kind of data exchange, not quantum computing and digital twins.

The pace of innovation is exponential. Regulations must be adaptable without being vague. A modular, principle-based approach, one that emphasizes intent and impact over rigid checklists, can allow laws to evolve alongside technology.

Lumping all technologies under generic “data protection” laws won’t cut it. AI needs rules around explainability and bias. Biometric tech needs consent frameworks that account for permanence. Blockchain needs clarity on ownership, access and the “right to be forgotten” in a world where deletion isn’t an option.

The need for updated, nuanced and globally-minded data regulation isn’t just urgent—it’s foundational. Because the rules we write now will shape not only how technologies evolve, but how we, as a society, define fairness, autonomy and innovation in the decades to come. Let’s make sure those rules aren’t just reactive, but visionary.
