Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly visible in everyday life. It can compose poetry, generate emails and even create dating profiles. These abilities give the impression that AI can act as a social partner, but the reality is much more complex. This interesting topic came to us from UCLA in their article, “Do AI systems socially interact the same way as living beings?“

Generative AI (GenAI) systems such as ChatGPT process language by identifying patterns and producing responses. This mimics the structure of human conversation at a surface level. However, humans bring cultural background, personal memory and emotional intention into communication, which generative AI cannot replicate. Its “knowledge” is limited to the data it has been trained on, whereas humans draw on lived experiences that shape meaning in deeper ways.

Another distinction lies in perception. Humans naturally interpret tone, body language and facial expression. AI approximates understanding by analyzing patterns in text and sentiment data, but it does not perceive in the human sense. While AI improves with greater exposure to data, its learning lacks the depth of emotional and experiential growth that defines human development.

The motivations behind interaction also differ. Humans engage with others to build connection, belonging and shared meaning. AI interacts only to complete assigned tasks. Its responses may appear empathetic, but they are programmed reflections of human inputs, not genuine expressions of feeling.

As AI becomes more integrated into communication, there is a temptation to treat it as a substitute for human interaction. This presents risks, as functional responses may be mistaken for relational understanding. While AI can support communication by translating languages, automating tasks and enhancing efficiency, it cannot replace the depth of human connection.

AI’s role is best understood as complementary rather than substitutive. Recognizing this distinction ensures that technology is used to enhance human relationships rather than replace them.
