In a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence (AI), creativity is undergoing a quiet rebellion. The Scholarly Kitchen brought this topic to our attention with their article, “Guest Post — Beyond Efficiency: Reclaiming Creativity and Wellbeing in the Age of AI and Scholarly Publishing.”
AI can compose music, write novels, design logos and even mimic a painter’s brushstroke with precision. It’s impressive and for some, intimidating. As algorithms churn out content at lightning speed, many creatives wonder if they still fit in.
Creativity is not just output. It’s process. It’s how we metabolize our lived experience, how we express grief, love, curiosity, protest or joy. In this sense, creativity is a form of resistance, especially when speed, productivity and efficiency are the metrics that seem to matter most. There’s no need to banish AI from the creative table. In fact, many artists, writers, musicians and thinkers are embracing these tools to spark ideas, challenge assumptions and push boundaries.
The more algorithms predict what we want, the easier it is to lose our sense of self in the feedback loop. But your perspective is rooted in your lived experience, memories, heritage and dreams, and cannot be reverse-engineered.
AI may be changing how we create, but it doesn’t change why we create. The drive to imagine, express and make meaning is woven into the human spirit. If anything, AI is inviting us to be more intentional, more embodied and more courageous in our creativity.
The biggest challenge is that most organizations have little knowledge on how AI systems make decisions and how to interpret AI and machine learning results. Explainable AI allows users to comprehend and trust the results and output created by machine learning algorithms. Explainable AI is used to describe an AI model, its expected impact and it potential biases. Why is this important? Because explainability becomes critical when the results can have an impact on data security or safety.
