Ontologies and Their Role in Knowledge Systems
Ontologies function as frameworks that give structure and meaning to information. They define concepts, entities and the relationships between them within a particular area of knowledge. By providing this organization, ontologies make it possible for systems and applications to interpret and use information with greater accuracy. Open Access Government brought this interesting topic to our attention in their article, “Toward human systems integration maturity.”
Their importance is evident in the creation of intelligent technologies. Systems that rely on natural language processing, knowledge representation or automated reasoning depend heavily on ontologies to mimic the ways humans connect and apply knowledge. Without them, these systems would lack the structure needed to manage complex information in a useful way.
Developing and applying ontologies, however, is not always straightforward. The success of artificial intelligence (AI) systems often depends on the quality of the underlying structure used to support them.
