Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more present in daily life and its influence has reached religious settings, congregations and faith organizations. Some churches are experimenting with AI-driven tools for administrative tasks, content creation, accessibility and community engagement. Automated translation, captioning and scheduling tools can support ministries with limited staffing or resources. AI can also help analyze attendance patterns, giving leaders insight into how to better serve their communities. Deseret News brought this topic to our attention in their article, “Is AI harming or helping faith communities?“

Alongside potential benefits, there are concerns. Some worry that AI could replace human roles traditionally rooted in personal connection, such as pastoral care, sermon preparation or spiritual counseling. The idea of technology handling sacred responsibilities creates discomfort for many, especially when faith is grounded in human presence, empathy and relational trust.

There are also ethical considerations. Questions about data privacy, surveillance, algorithmic bias and content accuracy are relevant in both secular and religious contexts. Faith communities are increasingly engaging in conversations about whether AI aligns with their values and how it should be used responsibly.

For many religious organizations, AI represents both an opportunity and a challenge. It has the potential to support outreach, improve accessibility and streamline operations. However, its use requires thoughtful discernment, transparency and ethical awareness. As AI evolves, churches and faith communities will continue exploring how technology can be integrated without compromising the deeply human experience at the center of spiritual life.

The biggest challenge is that most organizations (faith or secular) have little knowledge on how AI systems make decisions and how to interpret AI and machine learning results. Explainable AI allows users to comprehend and trust the results and output created by machine learning algorithms.
