Academic Publishing in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Academic publishing is entering a period of profound change as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes woven into research, writing and review processes. AI tools now assist scholars with literature discovery, data analysis, language refinement and even early drafting. These capabilities offer the promise of faster knowledge dissemination and broader participation, particularly for researchers working across languages or with limited institutional support. The Scholarly Kitchen brought this topic to our attention in their article, “Guest Post:  Academic Publishing Is  Not Fit for the Future – If We Don’t Act Now, The Vital Role Research Plays in Society Is at Risk.”

At the same time, this new landscape presents serious challenges. Questions of authorship, originality and intellectual ownership are becoming more complex as AI contributes to scholarly output. Peer review systems must adapt to detect fabricated data, hallucinated citations or overreliance on automated tools. There is also concern that unequal access to advanced AI systems could widen existing disparities between well funded institutions and under-resourced scholars.

If handled with care, AI does not have to be something academic publishing fears. With clear expectations, shared tools and a focus on transparency, it can become a practical partner rather than a shortcut. Used well, AI has the potential to support better research, widen participation and help scholars spend less time on busywork and more time doing the thinking that actually moves knowledge forward.

Everyone is looking at AI. Everyone is getting mixed results. The main issue is that data science has not changed, and scientific content is very complex and needs more attention to get the most out of the new AI engines. This is not new for Access Innovations.
