Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping academic publishing, creating both opportunities and governance challenges for research journals. The integration of AI tools into the research pipeline has accelerated tasks such as summarization, editing and even content generation. However, these same capabilities raise questions about authorship, originality and the standards of scholarly communication. This important topic was brought to our attention by The Scholarly Kitchen in their article, “Scary Times for Research Journals.“

One pressing concern is the difficulty of verifying whether submissions represent a researcher’s authentic contribution or the output of an AI system. Traditional plagiarism detection tools are not well-suited to this task, as they are designed to identify replicated text rather than content generated by advanced language models. This gap has led to broader debates across the publishing community about what constitutes acceptable AI use, how it should be disclosed and where the line should be drawn between assistance and substitution.

In response, many journals are evaluating policy measures and technological solutions. Emerging strategies include implementing detection systems trained to identify AI-generated text, requiring disclosure statements on the use of AI during manuscript preparation and developing guidelines to help editors and reviewers navigate gray areas. The objective is not to prohibit AI entirely but to balance its utility with safeguards that protect the integrity of research outputs.

Human expertise remains central to this balance. Editorial oversight and peer review continue to provide the critical judgment necessary to assess originality of ideas and the contribution of a study within its field. Technology may streamline workflows, but it cannot replace the interpretive role of scholars in maintaining academic standards.
