AI Is Still a Bit of a Science Experiment

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning have come a long way, no question. But if we’re being honest, a lot of what’s happening right now still feels like experimentation dressed up as precision. In many cases, people are running a bunch of models, tweaking settings and seeing what sticks. It works, but it is not always as clean or methodical as we like to pretend. Sometimes it feels less like engineering and more like tossing ingredients into a bowl and hoping the end result tastes good. The Economic Times brought this subject to our attention in their article, “The alchemy of artificial intelligence.”

The models themselves can be impressive. They deliver strong results and power all kinds of useful tools. But the way they get there is not always clear. Even the people building and using these systems do not always fully understand how a decision was made. That creates some real tension. Trust becomes harder to build. Accountability gets fuzzy. And if you cannot clearly explain how something works, it is tough to repeat it with confidence. At that point, it starts to feel a little like alchemy. You know it works, but the why behind it is still a bit mysterious.

As AI shows up more in healthcare, business and public systems, that mystery becomes a bigger problem. There is more at stake, and guessing is not a great long-term strategy. What is needed now is structure. Clear methods. Ethical guardrails. Systems that can actually explain themselves. If AI is going to mature into something we can rely on, it has to move beyond trial and error and start acting more like a true science.

Even then, there is a limit. AI can be powerful, but it does not automatically understand the nuances of every industry or organization.
