Everyone is feeling the pressure to be more sustainable, and IT is a big part of that conversation. Data centers, cloud systems and servers use a lot of energy. The challenge is cutting that footprint without slowing everything down. That is where generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is starting to show up in a meaningful way. This topic was inspired by IBM and their article, “New IBM study: How business leaders can harness the power of gen AI to drive sustainable IT transformation.”
GenAI can look at how systems are actually being used and spot where energy is being wasted. It can predict demand, shift workloads and help infrastructure run a lot more efficiently. Less waste, same performance. That is the goal.
It is also changing how software gets built. AI-assisted development tools can produce cleaner, more efficient code, which means applications need less processing power and storage. That might not sound flashy, but over time it adds up to real energy savings and longer-lasting hardware.
This space is still evolving, but the direction is clear. Smarter systems that do more with less.
And none of it works without the right foundation. AI is only as good as the structure behind it. When organizations take the time to prepare and organize their data properly, they are not just enabling AI. They are making it more responsible, more reliable and yes, more sustainable.
