Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming one of the most influential technologies of our time. It can analyze data, identify patterns, generate content, answer questions and perform tasks once thought to require human expertise. Yet as AI grows more capable, an important question emerges: Is intelligence enough? This timely and important topic came to us from Nature in their article, “Transforming artificial intelligence into artificial wisdom.”

Intelligence and wisdom are not the same thing.

AI excels at processing information. It can tell us what is happening, what happened in the past and what is statistically likely to happen next. Artificial wisdom, however, would involve understanding context, values, ethics and the human consequences of decisions. Intelligence answers questions. Wisdom helps determine which questions should be asked in the first place.

This distinction is especially important when considering the future of mental health. AI-powered tools are already helping expand access to mental health resources. Virtual assistants can provide coping strategies, identify warning signs of distress and offer support when human therapists are unavailable. For many people, these tools reduce barriers to seeking help and provide immediate assistance during difficult moments.

However, mental health is not solely a problem of information. People struggling with anxiety, depression, grief or loneliness often need empathy, connection and nuanced understanding. A system may recognize symptoms and recommend interventions, but wisdom involves understanding the deeper human experience behind those symptoms.

As AI becomes more integrated into healthcare and daily life, the goal should not be to replace human wisdom but to complement it. The most effective future may be one where AI handles analysis, while human professionals provide judgment, compassion and meaning.

The challenge ahead is not simply building smarter machines. It is ensuring that technological intelligence serves human wisdom. Mental health outcomes will depend not only on what AI can do, but on how wisely we choose to use it.
