A Newbie’s Guide to DHUG Meetings

The biggest week of the year at Access Innovations is almost upon us. Every year, we present Data Harmony Users Group (DHUG) meeting, where our esteemed clients come from all over the nation to meet and learn from the people who built the software and use it on a daily basis. Right about now, there starts to be a lot of buzz around the office. There are a lot of people coming to Albuquerque for this, and everyone here is pretty excited to swap ideas with them, because they’ve come up with some interesting uses of our software, things that have made us better in the process.

Is it Real or is it Memorex?

Sometimes life does imitate art and vice versa. On a recent episode of the CBS Series, The Good Wife, it was part of the plot to fake metadata on an email. It is interesting that metadata has become so common to our vernacular that it is fiction television and without the typical NSA, Big Brother, Government references attached.

Open Access to Scholarly Work

Open access to the publications of the Max Planck Research Library for the History and Development of Knowledge, in accordance with the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to knowledge in the sciences and humanities, was launched by the Max Planck Society in 2003. Their aim is to disseminate the results of scholarly work to a broad audience expediently and with little to no cost.

Sometimes I mess around with the Siri app on my iPhone, but that is the extent of that. However I have noticed more and more of my friends actually using the talk feature on their mobile phone to search the Internet. It is their verbal Google.

A Celebration of Roget’s Taxonomy

Later this week is January 18th, which for taxonomists is notable for two things: 1) it’s Thesaurus Day; and 2) it’s the birthday of Peter Mark Roget. This double occurrence is no coincidence. We may consider Doctor Roget to be the inventor of the thesaurus (or at least one of its pioneers), and a person whose birthday is cause for taxonomists’ celebration.
