The Ins and Outs of Researcher and Contributor Data

Making content findable to users, researchers, professionals, academics, etc., is a common goal. The Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) launched its registry in October 2012 for this exact reason. Now they are on track to reach 1 million registrations at their 2-year anniversary this month. With over 150 members, almost half from academic or government research institutes, and one-quarter from the publishing sector, they are enabling research data exchange interoperability through integration of identifiers into research data systems and workflows.

Nobody is going to deny that publishing is and always has been a sometimes messy process, but sophisticated uses of metadata and taxonomies can help clean it up. It fascinates me how intimately it can work in every step of the process to make it easier on everybody, from the author writing the piece to the institution that publishes it, all the way to its marketing and use.

We talk a lot about taxonomy in the realm of indexing organizational information against a solid and strong taxonomy built within standards so that content is found easily. It is easy sometimes to forget that taxonomy originated with science. Classification of animals, plants, and other organisms into appropriate categories for easy reference. eBird is a traditional genus-species kind of taxonomy except for the part about being online and searchable.

Word Geeks Unite

I like games, all types but especially word games. My love of Scrabble was developed early on as my mother and I would play for hours on end. My siblings had no interest so it was quality mom and me time that we still take advantage of when time and situations allow. That doesn't happen as often as I'd like, but I do appreciate her passing on a passion for words, books and vocabulary to me.
