Metadata powers effective action on information by providing context. But for the data context to be trustworthy, effective metadata management must in place. DATAVERSITY brought this news to our attention in their article, “Fundamentals of Metadata Management.”

With the Internet of Things (IOT), big data is growing exponentially, and with regulations that change on a daily basis, those in the position of making decisions about their data and their information must look at managing it more effectively through the use of metadata.

Metadata exists almost everywhere and in a variety of structures. Examples of technical metadata include column structure of a database table, keys and validation rules. Examples of business metadata include security levels, privacy levels, and acronym levels. Metadata differs from data in that it describes data.

Quality metadata is key to all parts of an organization when it comes to understanding the data on hand. Without useful metadata, the organization is at risk for making the wrong decisions based on the wrong data.
